Geography and Social Studies can be an exciting subject for kids to learn about. Their minds can be opened to the world around them and help them see that it is a diverse and interesting place. These subjects are usually combined together in homeschool curriculum and work with the things your child learns in History. Geography typically covers topics like continents, oceans, countries, states, communities, maps, and landforms. Social Studies teaches children about cultures and how they interact with the environment, as their locations in the world impact this. It also teaches things like government, how consumers and produces work in the world, the free market, and current events, just to name a few.
Learning these things can help children think critically about the world and their place in it. Geography can help plant the seed of exploration into the hearts and minds of young learners. Social Studies can also help children see that we are all connected, though different, and how important that diversity is.
