I’ve had many moms tell me that they’ve been interested in homeschooling but they feel nervous, or incapable, or unorganized, or, or, or…
Here’s what I tell them: If you would have waited to have a baby until you were perfectly prepared, you would have never have had your kids. Homeschool is the same. You will never be perfectly prepared–so just jump in with both feet and do it.
But if you are still hesitant, then summer is a great time to try it out. And no, you don’t need to spend the whole summer flipping through text books and testing your children. That’s now how homeschool works. I suggest interviewing your kids to see what they are interested in and go from there.
Cake Example
Do you have a child who wants to learn to bake and decorate cakes? Then do it! Teach them the skills of baking a cake, learn how to make different kinds of frosting, let them experiment with piping bags. Along the way you can read books about cakes (informative and silly), write an essay about which cake was the best, learn new spelling words around baking, discuss fractions, and have your child explain the steps of baking a cake while everyone in the family enjoys the creation.
But it doesn’t have to start or stop with cake. Maybe it’s music, graphic design, photography, or fishing.
If you need help, we’ve created a free template you can use to interview your kids. You can read more about it here.
