When we say interview, we mean interview. Sit down, face-to-face, and discuss their likes, dislikes, hopes and fear. For my family, this interview gets done each year on our child’s birthday. And they love it! They call it their “Birthday Questions.” But this year, we are trying this out a little differently. We will still ask their birthday questions (some serious, some silly) on their actual birthday, but we will hold a less detailed interview one other time during the year. This will help me to plan school around their interests and help them in areas where they may be struggling.
Why Interview?
- You are connecting with that child and only that child in the moment
- Your child feels heard, valued and loved
- You are forming a bond
- You are creating an open space where the child knows they can come to you
- It helps you know what interests your child may have
- It helps you know more about their comfort zone
- It gives you guidance in planning learning around their interests
- It gives you guidance in planning down time
- You know what books your child may be interested in
- You learn more about their fears so you can help them overcome them
- You model the behavior of reassessing one’s life
- You model the behavior of connection
- You model creating a life plan and short or long term goals
And those are just a few reasons why interviewing your children on a regular basis is helpful.
